Financial Crisis and Economic Crisis with Dr Paul Schure

Saturday, February 4, 2 - 3:30pm

Paul Schure, associate professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Victoria, will be lecturing on the reasons behind the financial ‘meltdown’ of recent times. 

In this talk, Dr. Schure will address why the 2007-08 financial crisis turned out to have a serious impact on the global economy. Dr Schure will also briefly go into the current European sovereign debt crisis and particularly the questions of how it is possible that economic woes in a small country like Greece can have such enormous impact on the stability of the European financial sector, and why Canada should care.  Cost for the lecture is $6.00

 

Lecture with Haig-Brown Writer in Residence,

Trevor Herriot

Saturday, February 11, 1:30 - 3pm

Take Herriot, an award winning author and naturalist from Regina, Saskatchewan, will talk about his writing life and his time at the historic Haig-Brown heritage property, and will read an excerpt from the book he is writing during his stay in Campbell River. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 per person

 

Basket Weaving Workshop with Joan Ryan

Friday, February 17, 1 - 3:30pm

Take advantage of this exceptional opportunity to try your skill at basket weaving, under the expert guidance of Joan Ryan.  Joan is a member of the Campbell River Band, and has travelled widely thoughout the province and to the United States teaching her technique.  "I weave baskets using a very strong and durable fibre called Sea Sweet Grass, which I dye, and I use my own techniques and designs to create a variety of baskets of different shapes, sizes and colours that are beautiful works of art," says Joan.

Cost for the workshop is $75.00 per person and includes materials.  Register early, the maximum is 12 people!

 

 

'Working In the Woods Today', Exhibit Opening and Talk

Saturday, February 4, 2—4pm

The public is welcome to attend the opening and meet the exhibit curator, Hans Peter Meyer.  Meyer feels we need a reminder that even though times have changed, there are still men and women working in the logging industry today. Meyers will give a brief talk about the development of his current project, a related book he is producing, that is a record of the coastal forest industry in the early part of the 21st century.

 

Annual Used Book Sale & Fundraiser

Saturday, March 3, Sunday, March 4, Tuesday, March 6, & Wednesday, March 7, 12—4pm

Don’t miss our ‘History to Mystery’ gigantic used book sale!  You are sure to find some of your favourite authors and discover some new ones too, at very attractive prices.  And this year we have extended the sale by two days.

You can donate your gently used books from February 1st to March 1st at the Museum’s back door off 4th Ave, during Museum hours.  Please no encyclopedias, textbooks, Reader’s Digests or magazines.

 

Writing About the More-Than-Human World: a workshop on Nature Writing

Saturday, March 3, 1-4pm at the Haig-Brown House, 2250 Campbell River Road

Come join Writer in Residence Trevor Herriot while he is in Campbell River

at the cozy Haig-Brown Heritage House on the river for a

writer's workshop on cultivating the soul and craft of nature writing. 

Cost is $45 per person, and refreshments will be served.

 

Pictorial Presentation: The Logging of Yesteryear with Danny Brown

Saturday, March 10, 1 - 2:30pm

Veteran presenter and Museum docent Danny Brown will be holding a talk about the early days of logging in the North Central Vancouver Island area, which he has been researching for several years. 

In his talk he will discuss the various companies that dominated the logging industry in the Campbell River area, and will be showing an excellent selection of archival photographs from the Museum’s holdings.    

Cost is $6 per person
