• Campbell River establishes its first transit system.

 

• The town continues to replace its pioneer infrastructure with the opening of a new Municipal Hall.

• Campbell River "twins" with Ishikari, Japan.

1984

• The Bahamian cruise ship, Sundancer, runs aground near Maude Island. 

• In an attempt to power through the ebbing tide of the Seymour Narrows, the ship's Captain increased the Sundancer's speed.  Unfortunately, this caused the ship to strike land at Maude Island.  The crippled ship made its way to the Elk Falls Mill dock where all 787 passengers were rescued. 

1985

 
• Painter's Lodge is destroyed by fire.

• The Van Isle Theatre is renovated to create a new performing arts venue, The Tidemark Centre.

 

• A new library opens.

 

• The Discovery Pier, Canada's first salt-water fishing pier, is opened.

 

• Willow Point Park is established.
