| • The Provincial Government gives a green light to the Tyee Plaza landfill project, overriding objections from the Village Commission, the Town Planning Commission and the Chamber of Commerce who wish to protect Campbell River's waterfront. |

• The Willows Hotel, Campbell River's best known landmark, is destroyed by fire.
• The Discovery Inn opens for business. |

• Campbell River amalgamates with Willow Point and becomes a District Municipality.
• A new road links Campbell River with the north Island communities of Port Hardy and Port McNeill.
• Elk Falls Mill undergoes further expansion. |

• Western Mines begins construction of their mine at Myra Falls in Strathcona Park.
• The road to Sayward is paved.
• A new highschool is built - Campbell River Senior High.
• The Haida Inn opens. |
