1904

 

• E. Hannan and C. Thulin arrive from Lund and build a store and the Willows Hotel.  Campbell River's nucleus is formed.

• Charles Thulin was born in Sweden in 1863.  He left his homeland for North America and eventually made his way to the west coast.  After spending some time handlogging, Charles and his brother Frederick established the village of Lund, which included two stores and two hotels.  The brothers planned on building a hotel in Willow Point, but later decided on Campbell River after obtaining better property.  They named the hotel after its original chosen location.  The Willows Hotel was two-storeys high and had thirteen rooms.

1906

 

Campbell River's second General Store,

• A larger store is built at the south end of present-day Robert V. Ostler Park.

 

• Campbell River gets a new wharf and becomes a regular port of call.

 

• The International Timber Company begins logging operations in the Campbell River area.


1908

 
• A second Willows Hotel is built.  The first hotel becomes known as the "Annex", serving as a saloon and is later converted into suites.

• Telegraph lines link Campbell River and Courtenay.

 

• The second Willows Hotel is destroyed by fire.

 

• A third Willows Hotel is constructed.
