Every year since 1977 the International Council of Museums has coordinated events around the world to celebrate International Museum Day on May 18th.  The objective of these celebrations is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.”

The Museum at Campbell River is celebrating International Museums Day again this year.  May 18th is the first day of their summer hours, where the Museum is open from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week.  Their celebration this year will be themed “Behind the scenes at the Museum”, and they will be offering tours of the artifact storage room with Collections Manager Megan Purcell.  “The Museum’s collection extends well beyond what the public normally sees in the exhibits.  This is a rare opportunity for the public to see some of the artifacts that are not currently on display as part of our exhibits,” explains Purcell.  The free tours will be offered at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

The Museum will also be offering free admission and refreshments from 3 to 5pm during the day.  There will be selfie stations in the exhibits and people who tag the Museum in their social media posts about visiting the Museum for International Museum Day get their name in a draw for a free family membership.  There will also be a scavenger hunt for the kids.
